The French "nombre"
The "nombre" indicates whether a noun is singular or plural.
Examples :
le chien (singular), les chiens (plural).
In French, “nombre” is a grammatical property of nouns that determines agreement with determiners, adjectives and verbs.
It distinguishes between singular (one element) and plural (several elements).
Plural formation follows regular patterns but also includes irregular forms that must be memorized.
1. singulier
Refers to one single element.
Example : la maison.
2. pluriel
Refers to several elements.
Example : les maisons.
3. pluriels irréguliers
Some nouns form their plural in an irregular way.
Example : le travail / les travaux.
4. noms invariables
Some nouns do not change form in the plural.
Example : des prix.
Le chat mange.
Les chats mangent.
Des enfants jouent.
